About this item

Firecracker Penstemon is a spectacular California native perennial prized for its brilliant scarlet-red flower spikes and exceptional ability to thrive in hot, dry conditions. Growing approximately 2–3 feet tall and 3 feet wide, this upright-growing perennial brings a bold splash of color to the landscape while attracting hummingbirds and other beneficial pollinators.

Native to Southern and Central California, as well as the desert mountain regions of the Mojave Desert, Firecracker Penstemon is naturally adapted to sunny, arid environments. Its striking tubular flowers emerge on tall, slender stems in spring and summer, creating a beautiful display of vibrant red blooms with subtle yellow accents.

An excellent choice for rock gardens, desert landscapes, native plant gardens, and interior valleys, this hardy perennial is especially well-suited to water-wise and low-maintenance landscapes. Once established, it requires very little supplemental irrigation and thrives in fast-draining soils such as sand or decomposed granite. Its exceptional heat and drought tolerance, combined with its cold hardiness, make it a versatile and rewarding addition to the garden.

For best results, plant in full sun to partial shade with excellent soil drainage. A beautiful choice for adding long-lasting seasonal color while supporting local hummingbird populations.
