Festuca californica - California Fescue (5 Gallon)

About this item:

California Fescue (Festuca californica) is a graceful California native perennial grass prized for its flowing, fountain-like form, attractive evergreen foliage, and adaptability to water-wise landscapes. This fast-growing bunchgrass forms dense clumps of long, narrow leaves that arch outward from the center, adding soft texture and natural movement to the garden.

Typically growing 1–4 feet tall and around 3 feet wide, California Fescue brings year-round structure to native plantings. Its slender foliage provides habitat for butterflies and moths, while its delicate yellowish flower heads emerge in spring and summer, adding subtle seasonal interest.

Landscape Uses: An excellent choice for California native gardens, habitat restoration, erosion control, and naturalistic landscapes. California Fescue is particularly useful for revegetating grasslands where non-native grasses have taken hold. Its clumping, fountain-like growth also makes it a beautiful groundcover, lawn alternative, or accent grass in mixed native plantings. It is generally considered deer resistant.

Growing Notes: California Fescue grows well in full sun to partial shade and prefers loamy or clay soils. It may struggle in sandy soils but can tolerate serpentine soils, making it useful in a variety of California landscapes. Once established, it requires very little supplemental water. During summer, occasional deep watering may be sufficient, depending on soil, temperature, and exposure. Avoid excessive irrigation to help maintain healthy growth.
