About this item

A distinctive Channel Islands buckwheat prized for its compact form and vibrant summer-long display of bright pink to red flowers. Blooming from June through October, it provides exceptional seasonal color while attracting butterflies and other beneficial pollinators.

This evergreen shrub forms a dense, low-growing mound approximately 1 foot tall and up to 3 feet wide. Small, spoon-shaped leaves are gray-green above with a soft, woolly texture underneath, adding year-round interest. Once established, it requires very little supplemental water and is an excellent choice for water-wise landscapes.

In inland gardens, provide a little more protection from intense afternoon sun than would be necessary in coastal locations. Plants typically remain productive for 3–5 years, but readily reseed in many gardens, allowing new plants to replace older ones naturally.

For maximum wildlife value, allow flowers to mature and go to seed. The seed heads provide an important food source for birds and can be removed after birds have finished feeding or the seed has naturally dispersed. The long blooming season also provides a valuable, sustained nectar source for butterflies, including Gray Hairstreak and Acmon Blue.

Prune lightly in fall to maintain a tidy appearance, taking care not to cut into old wood.
