About this item

Desert Broom (Baccharis sarothroides) is a hardy, fast-growing native shrub valued for its bright green foliage, abundant summer blooms, and versatility in dry landscapes. Also known as Broom Baccharis, this resilient plant can grow up to 12 feet tall and 6 feet wide, making it an excellent choice for natural screening, slope stabilization, and filling large open spaces.

Its small, thick leaves typically remain bright green year-round in foothill areas receiving approximately 15 inches of annual rainfall. In drier desert environments, the plant may shed its leaves during summer as an adaptation to arid conditions. During summer, Desert Broom produces masses of fluffy white to cream-colored flowers that can cover the plant in a soft, cloud-like display.

Native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, Desert Broom naturally occurs in coastal sage scrub and inland scrub habitats, often in dry canyons and open plains at elevations below 1,000 feet. In California, its native range is primarily limited to the southern part of the state.

Landscape Uses: Ideal for natural screening, erosion control, slope stabilization, and large-scale native or drought-tolerant landscape plantings.

Growing Notes: Desert Broom is well adapted to dry conditions and can thrive in challenging landscapes with minimal supplemental water once established. Its abundant fluffy seed production can be messy or unwanted in some settings, so consider placement carefully.

A practical choice for gardeners seeking a tough, adaptable shrub that brings seasonal interest and helps fill challenging spaces in water-wise landscapes.
